Recurring exhauster costs and unreliable soak pits are solved by the BZM Wastewater Treatment Plant, which treats sewage on site through settlement, aeration and chlorination, so treated water can be safely discharged or reused without ever needing an exhauster.
The problem you already know too well
A conventional septic tank does not treat wastewater; it simply holds it until a truck comes to remove it, and on any property with meaningful occupancy, be it a family home, an embassy, a gated estate or a small institution, that arrangement breaks down fast. Exhauster visits become a recurring cost, tanks fill at inconvenient times, and if your plot sits on clay soil, a soak pit will not drain properly at all, leaving you with backups, odour and no real long-term fix.
There’s a better way: treat it fully on site
The BZM Wastewater Treatment Plant is a constructed sewage treatment system that combines anaerobic digestion and aerobic digestion, settlement and chlorination to treat wastewater to NEMA Schedule 6 standard before discharge. It works along the same principle as a household biodigester septic tank, but carries the process further, adding aeration, secondary clarification and chlorination stages so effluent quality goes well beyond what a standalone biodigester can achieve alone. Instead of storing waste for periodic removal, the BZM Wastewater Treatment Plant continuously treats incoming sewage and releases water clean enough for irrigation, car washing and pavement cleaning; no exhauster required, and no dependence on soil absorption.

How the BZM Wastewater Treatment Plant actually works
The plant treats incoming sewage through a defined sequence of stages:
- Primary screening. Indigestible waste is trapped and removed from incoming sewage before it reaches the primary tank.
- Primary settlement. Effluent undergoes settlement while anaerobic digestion begins breaking down organic solids, aided by an enzyme and bacterial culture such as Septozyme BFB, which is formulated specifically to accelerate anaerobic breakdown in this chamber.
- Equalization. A buffering stage smooths out peak flow variations, with pumps moving effluent on from this stage into the aeration process, so periods of high use do not overwhelm the treatment plant.
- Aeration. A blower feeding fine bubble diffusers introduces air into the bioreactors, driving aerobic digestion that works alongside the earlier anaerobic stage for thorough breakdown of organic matter before discharge. Dosing this stage with an aerobic culture such as Envirozyme BFB supports faster, more complete aerobic breakdown.
- Secondary settlement and clarification. Treated effluent from the bioreactors is allowed to settle and clarify.
- Chlorination. The final treatment stage kills any remaining microorganisms before discharge to the environment.
- Desludging. Settled sludge is returned from the clarifier back to the primary treatment zone, so the treatment cycle continues without manual removal. Periodic dosing with Bamoyeast BFB keeps sludge that settles on the tank floor properly digested, reducing how often manual desludging is ever needed.
- Prefiltration for irrigation use. For treated water intended for irrigation, sand media together with activated carbon and RO pressure filters remove suspended particles, sediment, iron, unwanted colour, turbidity and unpleasant odours.
What this actually means for you
- No more exhauster trucks. The BZM Wastewater Treatment Plant’s continuous on-site treatment removes the need for periodic tank emptying, along with its cost and disruption.
- No dependence on soak pits. Because the BZM Wastewater Treatment Plant discharges treated water rather than relying on ground absorption, clay soil and other difficult ground conditions are no longer a barrier to safe wastewater disposal.
- Water you can reuse. Treated effluent meets NEMA Schedule 6 guidelines, making it suitable for irrigation, car washing and pavement cleaning, turning what used to be waste into a usable resource.
- A dual digestion process for thorough treatment. Combining anaerobic and aerobic digestion means organic matter is broken down more completely before the water ever reaches the chlorination stage, a step beyond what a basic biodigester setup alone provides.
- Grease and lipid buildup handled separately. Kitchens and food service areas, common in embassies, schools and apartment blocks, feed fats and oils into the system that ordinary treatment does not break down well. Dosing grease traps and inlet lines with SeptoClean BFB digests these lipids before they can clog pipework or slow the treatment process.
- A potential biogas offset. Biogas can be harnessed from the initial treatment stages, giving the system a use beyond simply processing waste.
- Self sustaining treatment cycle. Desludging returns settled solids to the primary zone automatically, so the system keeps working without ongoing manual intervention.
- Documented, standards-based performance. Effluent is measured against clear NEMA Schedule 6 parameters, covering pH, BOD, COD, suspended solids, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, total dissolved solids, E. coli, total coliform and colour, giving you a documented basis for compliance rather than guesswork.
Who the BZM Wastewater Treatment Plant is built for
This system is suited to any property or institution generating a meaningful, steady volume of daily sewage and looking for a permanent alternative to exhauster dependence:
- Homeowners on plots with clay soil or other conditions that make a soak pit unreliable, or who already run a biodigester septic tank and want a more complete treatment result.
- Embassies, diplomatic residences and similar institutions where occupancy is consistent and compliance and discretion both matter.
- Landlords and estate managers who want to remove exhauster visits and tenant disruption from ongoing property costs.
- Small to mid sized institutions, such as schools and clinics, that are already identified by NEMA and public health guidance as significant sources of urban wastewater pollution.
Common questions, answered honestly
What does installation involve? The plant is a constructed system, built from design and construction drawings specific to your site, including excavation, sub structural and wall construction, plumbing and electrical installation, and introduction of the enzyme and bacteria culture that starts the biological treatment process.
How long does installation take? Structural construction typically takes around nine weeks, followed by around three weeks for equipment installation and commissioning, though exact timelines depend on site conditions.
What does the client need to provide? Water, electricity and security during construction, sewer drainage to and from the plant, any required council or NEMA certifications and permits, and a secure space for housing blowers, pumps, filters and the control board.
Is the treated water actually safe to reuse? Yes. Treated water is measured against NEMA Schedule 6 parameters and, following prefiltration, is suitable for irrigation, car washing and pavement cleaning.
What warranty is provided? Workmanship is warranted for one year from commissioning, appliances carry their manufacturer’s warranty, and the system overall carries a ten-year guarantee, with an annually renewed service contract after an initial free service period.
What can void the warranty? Standard exclusions apply, including normal wear and tear, misuse, lack of maintenance, incorrect installation or connection, and repairs carried out by anyone other than the contracted provider; full terms are confirmed at the point of proposal.
The real cost comparison
An exhauster visit is never a single cost; it recurs for as long as the property is occupied, and the cost only grows if the tank is undersized for actual use or the plot’s soil makes a soak pit unreliable. A constructed treatment plant is a defined, one-time capital investment made at the point of installation, after which ongoing costs are limited to routine servicing rather than repeat collections, with the added benefit of reusable water and a possible biogas offset working in your favour rather than against your budget.
Ready to end exhauster dependence for good?
If exhauster visits, a failing soak pit or compliance concerns are driving up the cost of managing wastewater on your property, the next step is a site assessment. Our engineers will review your daily sewage volume, soil conditions and site layout, and specify a BZM Wastewater Treatment Plant sized correctly for your property, with no obligation.
